The one-day SGBV Activation Workshop held on the 25th of August was declared open by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Angela Oyo Ita, on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Obi. The DVC provided a summary of ongoing interventions that support an enabling and gender-friendly school environment. Among the interventions described was the institutionalization of the Directorate of Gender Development, the Guidance and Counselling Unit, the Youth Friendly Hub, the Gender-Sensitive Security Team and Students' access to functional management helplines.   The DVC acknowledged the timely engagement with the Spotlight Initiative of the EU and UN Women implemented by Women at Risk International Foundation (WARIF). She encouraged the WARIF and the University of Calabar Sexual and Gender-Based Violence Response Team to commence the project implementation as soon as possible as the University Management is open to supporting the entire process. The DVC also expressed confidence in the ability of the response team to meet the engagement objectives as the inception workshop will provide necessary guidance During the technical session, WARIF team (Folashade and Damilola) facilitated the sessions that covered the overview of the WARIF/UN Women Spotlight Initiative, school-related gender-based violence, media use in combating violence, advocacy, and the response implementation plan for the University of Calabar.
